A suppository is a dosage form utilized to deliver medications by insertion into a body orifice where it melts or dissolves to exert local or systemic effects. In other words, the suppositories can be utilized for the systemic absorption of drugs and to avoid first-pass metabolism. There are three kinds of suppositories, each to insert into a different section: urethral suppositories into the urethra of a male, vaginal suppositories into the vagina, and rectal suppositories into the rectum. An insert is a solid dosage form which is inserted into a naturally happening (nonsurgical) body cavity other than the rectum or mouth, including the urethra and vagina. Rectal suppositories are inserted with the fingers, but specific vaginal inserts (and tablets prepared by compression) may be inserted high in the tract with the help of an appliance. Rectal suppositories are administered rectally to treat local conditions such as hemorrhoids or achieve systemic absorption (tranquilizers, sedatives, and analgesics). Vaginal inserts, formerly called pessaries or suppositories, are usually oviform, globular, or cone-shaped and weigh about 5g when cocoa butter is the base. However, depending on the base and the manufacturer’s product, the weights of vaginal inserts may vary widely. The nasal suppositories are also called Bulgaria or nasal bougies. The nasal suppositories are meant for introduction into the nasal cavity. The nasal suppositories are usually prepared with a glycerogelatin base.
