The global marine diesel oil (MDO) market was valued at USD 4.85 billion in 2022, increasing at a CAGR of 4.28% from 2022 to 2030 and is anticipated to reach USD 6.78 billion by 2030. Asia-Pacific is expected to grow the fastest during the forecast period. The Marine Diesel Oil (MDO) industry was negatively affected by the COVID-19 epidemic. The NYTDAC, in its study of Maritime Transport 2020, had estimated around a 4.1% decline in the global maritime trade because of unanticipated disruption caused by the covid-19 pandemic outbreak.

Market Introduction:

Marine Diesel Oil (MDO) is a kind of power oil with a combination of heavy fuel oil and gasoil. It has more gasoil in comparison to intermediate fuel oil, which is utilised in the marine field. It is also known as “distillate marine diesel”.  MDO is broadly operated by medium-speed marine diesel engines and is also in demand for high-speed maritime diesel engines. They are applied in larger medium-speed and low-speed propulsion engines that generally burn residual fuel. These fuels are the result of a visbreaking refinery and catalytic cracking. Marine diesel oil is criticized due to the excess sulfur in it. Hence many organizations and countries have created rules and regulations on MDO usage. MDO has a lower price than the more refined fuel; therefore, it is especially preferred by the shipping industry.  The low-sulfur fuel oil in the marine industry is generally divided into pure distillate, marine gas oil (MGO) and marine diesel oil (MDO), a combination that contains both distillates and residuals. At present, the marine industry represents around one-tenth of petroleum consumption. The sulfur cap, when introduced in 2020, the global demand for distillates is forecasted to increase by 85 million tonnes per year, i.e., from 1.2 to 1.3 billion tonnes, as most vessels would have to switch from HFO to MDO or another compliant fuel blend. All these factors are driving the marine diesel oil market.

Recent Development

For example, in December 2014, Neste Oil, a Finnish oil firm and bunker supplier, started trading 0.1% DMB MDO. The organization introduced this MDO product before the new Emission Control Area (ECA) regulation of January next year. This led to an increase in the sales of MDO and thus helped in the expansion of market share for the organization.

For example, in November 2017, NYK Group developed an anti-coagulation fuel additive known as  Wax Breaker. It supports improving the oil fluidity at low temperatures for safe operations. These are added to MGO and MDO to prevent coagulation at low temperatures. It helps promote safe shipping, eventually driving the Marine Diesel Oil (MDO) market.

Market Dynamics:

Drivers:

Availability of marine diesel oil with different sulfur content level: Marine diesel oil with various sulfur content levels is getting sold. For instance, IFO 380 and IFO 180 have the highest sulfur content of 3.5% based on ISO 8217. It is traded in a low-sulfur variant with less than 1% sulfur content. The ships can enter the emission control area (ECA) using this. Also, if the ship-owners utilise the engine fuel blend with a high sulfur range, the emission values can be met using supplemental technology like filter systems and scrubbers.  The various blending ratios of marine diesel oil led to its use in numerous engines. For instance, the lighter version, such as DMB and RMA 10, is used for smaller to medium/high-speed marine engines. It also has its application in auxiliary power units along with auxiliary engines on very large ships. The viscous IFO 380 is generally utilised in big aggregates. The lightweight and low-sulfur marine diesel oil is occasionally used in larger engines when the area with stricter emission limits is crossed. Once the area is crossed, the ship will switch to marine fuel with increased emissions. These factors are driving the market.

Restraints:

High price of marine diesel oil: The lighter Marine gas oil (MGO) and Marine Diesel Oil (MDO) fuels have a considerably high price in comparison to heavy fuel oil (HFO). Therefore commercial ships broadly use the latter oil for the most part. These big ships use MDO in restricted areas only. These ships switch to the HFO after they cross the restricted area to save operational costs. These factors are acting as a restraint for the market.

Opportunities:

Growing maritime logistics: Based on one of the studies, maritime transport is the spine of the global economy and international trade. More than 80% of the volume of international business in goods is carried by sea. This percentage is more in most developing countries. The main mode of transport for global trade is ocean shipping. Based on another study, as the demand for global freight increases, the maritime trade volume would get tripled by 2050. Hence, to decrease greenhouse gas emissions, the Marine Environment Protection Committee at the end of 2020 met and tried to help cut the shipping carbon emission by 40% compared to 2008 levels by 2030.  Hence low sulfur-compliant fuels are getting used. MDO/MGO is being used in ECAs, and it can be used post-2020 with the requirement to change in technology. Moreover, it is broadly available across the world with no additional Capex requirement. All these factors would propel the Marine Diesel Oil (MDO) market in the forecasting period.

Challenges:

Economic slowdown: The economic slowdown would lead to a decrease in maritime logistics, which eventually affects the sales of the MDO, and thus it acts as a challenge to market growth. Economic slowdown led to a reduction in GDP growth, which led to a gap between production and earnings; thus, the market would go down.

Segmentation analysis:

Regional segmentation analysis:

The regions analyzed for the market include Europe, South America, Asia Pacific, North America, the Middle East, and Africa. Asia Pacific emerged as the largest market for the global marine diesel oil (MDO) market, with a 36.86% share of the market revenue in 2022. Asia Pacific dominates the marine diesel oil (MDO) market due to its predominance in the global maritime trade. Asia is also the largest seafarer-providing region in the world. Based on one of the studies, the Phillippines are leading in providing seafarers and officers. Indonesia was third in ratings and fifth for officers. Similarly, China was third for officers and fourth for ratings. India was fifth for ratings and fourth for officers. Seafarers are considered a crucial source of income for the supplying countries; for instance, the Philippines got around USD 6.5 Billion in 2019 for its seafarers. The North America is having the second highest market share in the Marine Diesel Oil (MDO) market. This is attributed to an increase in maritime tourism and growing shipbuilding activities. Also, stringent laws have led to a surge in the adoption of green fuels. This eventually propelled the growth of the market.

Application segment analysis

The application segment is divided into low-speed marine diesel engine and medium & high speed marine diesel engine. The medium & high speed marine diesel engine segment dominated, with a market share of around 69.20% in 2022. MDO is broadly used by medium-speed and medium/high-speed marine diesel engines. The low-sulfur fuel oil in the marine industry is generally divided into marine gas oil (MGO), a pure distillate, and marine diesel oil (MDO), a blend that contains both distillates and residuals. At present, the marine industry represents around one-tenth of petroleum consumption.

Type segment analysis

The type segment is divided into light diesel oil and heavy-duty diesel oil. In 2022, the heavy-duty diesel oil segment dominated the market with the largest market share of 75.60% and market revenue of 3.66 billion. Marine Diesel Oil (MDO) is combination of heavy duty fuel oil and gasoil. Marine diesel oil is identical to diesel fuel, but it has a more density. Marine diesel oil generally refers to mixes with a little ratio of heavy fuel oil.
