Global industrial nitrogen market is anticipated to reach USD 30.84 Billion by 2028, at a CAGR of 9.40% from 2021 to 2028. Global industrial nitrogen market is witnessing considerable growth due to the growing food & beverage and pharmaceutical industries in the emerging markets. Technological advancements in industrial gas are the major factors driving the growth of the industrial nitrogen market.

Market Overview:

Nitrogen is an odor-free, colorless, tasteless gas that accounts for 78.09 percent of breathing air and it is incombustible. Nitrogen gas is slightly soluble in water and slightly lighter than air. It is generally thought of and used as an inert gas, but it is not truly inert. When combined with oxygen, it produces nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide, ammonia by hydrogen, and nitrogen sulfide by sulphur.

Nitrogen compounds are made by biological activity, naturally. Nitrogen can be combined with some metals such as magnesium, lithium and titanium at high temperatures to form nitrides. Nitrogen is essential in different biological processes and is used as a fertilizer, typically in the form of compounds based on ammonia. Compounds that are formed with halogens and some organic compounds may be explosive. Smaller amounts of industrial nitrogen can be produced as a gas by processes of pressure swing adsorption or diffusion separation whereas large-volume of industrial nitrogen is supplied by cryogenic distillation.

Nitrogen is used in various industries from the food industry to drug manufacturing. Industrial nitrogen has been a predominant option in many fields, including but not limited to: packaging in the food industry to avoid oxidation and food spoilage, in the form of nitrous oxide, nitrogen is used in the SCUBA equipment and as an anesthetic in surgery, used to produce transistors, circuits and diodes, welding and metalworking to prevent the development of oxides and waste compounds, nitrous oxide is used as a propellant in jet fuel and professional motor racing, in producing steel to avoid oxidation, as a cheaper alternative to argon in light bulb production. Gaseous nitrogen is valued for inertness. Whereas, liquid nitrogen is valued for coldness as well as inertness.

Market Dynamics:

Drivers:
  • Rapidly rising food & beverage industry

A key driver for the growth of the global industrial nitrogen market is the rapidly rising food and beverage industry. In fact, the increasing population has contributed to a huge rise in demand for food products, coupled with the need to also maintain the quality and safety of the products.

Nitrogen frequently tends to maintain food products fresh by reducing the risk of discoloration and spoilage. The rising issues related to food safety and hygienic storage are expected to further fuel this global market over the forecasted time period.

  • Growth of Modern Healthcare

The demand for cryogen from the healthcare industry to conserve and freeze blood, tissues, and reproductive cells, etc., is fuelling market growth. The healthcare sector is expected to boost the growth of the industrial nitrogen market in the future, owing to major technological advances.

Restraints:
  • Structural and regulatory frameworks

In certain regions, regulatory and structural frameworks are not conducive to the manufacture of nitrogen. Also, concerns relating to hazards of industrial nitrogen are hampering the market growth.

Opportunities:
  • Increasing Demand From the Chemical Industry

Within the chemical sector, industrial nitrogen is used for reactor cooling, as a pressurizing gas for propelling liquid into pipes and for extracting volatile organic compounds from the process stream. This increasing demand for nitrogen in the chemical industry will provide a huge opportunity to the market over the forecast period.

Challenges:
  • The high cost of production and growth stagnation in North America and Europe

A number of areas in developing economies are also dealing with the high cost of nitrogen production. In addition, developed markets such as those in Europe and North America can see maturing industrial nitrogen demand and thus may act as a challenge for the market during the forecast period.

Segmentation Analysis:

The global industrial nitrogen market has been segmented based on technology, form, transportation & distribution, end-use industry and regions.

  • The form segment is divided into liquid nitrogen and compressed gas. The compressed gas segment led the industrial nitrogen market with a market share of around 62% in 2020. Since it is an active element, nitrogen gas is used to contain the volatile and flammable liquefied petroleum products, and therefore is widely used in many industries. Because it is an inert gas, which is often used in stainless steel manufacturing.
  • The technology segment includes cryogenic fractional distillation, pressure swing adsorption and membrane separation. The cryogenic fraction distillation segment is projected to grow at a higher CAGR of around 11.1% during the forecast period because cryogenic fraction distillation is widely used technique for the production of high-purity industrial gas, as it is an inexpensive and cost-effective process for large manufacturing plants.
  • The transportation & distribution segment is divided into bulk, cylinder & packed gas and tonnage/pipeline. The bulk segment is anticipated to grow at a higher CAGR of around 11.3% during the forecast period since large quantities of industrial nitrogen are provided via bulk supplies as bulk networks efficiently and cost-effectively supply the product.
  • The end-use industry segment is divided into food & beverages, metal manufacturing & fabrication, pharmaceuticals & healthcare, oil & gas, chemical, petrochemical, electronics and others. The food & beverage segment led the nitrogen market with a market share of around 22% in 2020 because industrial nitrogen produces a dry atmosphere, which ensures food is not damaged owing to moisture. It is also used to increase product shelf-life and maintain freshness, which helps in the storage and packaging of food & beverages which in turn drives industrial nitrogen demand in this industry.
Regional Segmentation Analysis:

The regions evaluated for the industrial nitrogen market include Europe, North America, South America, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East and Africa. The Asia Pacific region emerged as the largest market for industrial nitrogen with a 32.5% share of market revenue in 2020.

  • The rise in demand for industrial nitrogen is due to the rise in industrialization and population with high disposable earnings in the region.
  • Asia Pacific is projected to be the fastest-growing region during the forecast period due to the rise in end-use industries like food and beverages. Furthermore, introduction of better approaches for processing nitrogen often strengthens the prospects of this regional market.
