Global glycerin market is expected to reach USD 7.21 billion by 2030, at a CAGR of 6.90% from 2021 to 2030.The rising adoption of the glycerin in food and beverage industry is the primary factor for market growth and development for glycerin in present scenario.

Market Overview:

Glycerin is the main component of triglycerides that is usually found in vegetable oil animal fat, and crude oil. Glycerol is derived from biodiesel production or from soap. Glycerin is an organic alcohol mixture of sugar and alcohol and is fully miscible in water. Apart from water, glycerin is miscible in various other substances and compounds. Due to its properties, glycerin has many uses and applications in every industry vertical. The most common uses and application of Glycerol are as follows:

  • Thickening agent in cosmetics and foods
  • Emulsifier and humectant in cosmetics
  • Sweetening agent
  • Plasticizer in packaging, paints and paper industry
  • Preservative in many industries, such as foods and beverages

Glycerin is the simplest of the alcohols and is known by its IUPAC name as propane-1,2,3-triol. It is also known as glycerol, trihydroxypropane, 1,2,3-propanotriol, glycer-itol or glycidic alcohol. Glycerin is a sugary and clear liquid with a sweet taste and is extremely hygroscopic (water attracting) in pure form. The chemical compound contains three hydrophilic hydroxyl groups which are accountable for being hygroscopic. Instead of being crystallized, glycerin tends to super cool at low temperatures. Aqueous glycerin solutions resist freezing and are utilized as antifreeze in cooling systems. Glycerin does not oxidize in the atmosphere in normal room temperature, but can be easily oxidized by other oxidizing agents. Additionally, Glycerol has low vapor pressure and low volatility that is connected with its hygroscopic property of the compound.

Market Dynamics:

Drivers:
  • Increasing demand for glycerin in cosmetics and personal care industry

Steady economic and financial development in developing and emerging nations such as China, India, Brazil and Southeast Asia nations coupled with the rising per capita income and expenditure of the people is expected to drive the market growth and development. Glycerin is used as solvent and lubricant in personal care products. Thus, the demand for glycerin is going to stimulate the market growth and development.

  • Rising demand for renewable energy resources

Biofuels are gradually as a sustainable and eco-friendly source of fuel in the present scenario. An increase in global biodiesel production is likely to escalate the growth of global glycerin market. Biodiesel is considered to be eco-friendly, safe and sustainable as it produces less air pollutants in comparison to traditional and conventional fuels. Irrespective of any engine modification, biodiesel is most often utilized as a blend with petroleum diesel fuel in many diesel vehicles in many countries. Biodiesel acts as main raw process for the glycerin manufacturing and production. The production process is called as trans-esterification. In this process, glycerin is obtained as a by-product.

Restraints:
  • High costs associated with the refining process

For every ton of biodiesel produced, around 100 kg of glycerol is also generated as a by-product. The traditional method of removing glycerol is mainly by centrifugation or gravity separation. This method generates glycerin of crude grade, which may contain impurities such as methanol, salt, oil, and other organic process at ppm (parts per million) levels. Thus to obtain refined glycerol, the cost associated with the refining process is high. Additionally, this process involves high capital investment and maintenance cost, coupled with considerable losses of glycerol. Thus, this factor may restrain the market growth currently.

Opportunities:
  • Rising adoption rate of glycerin in food and beverage industry

The rising adoption rate of glycerin in food & beverage industry is going to provide significant growth opportunities. The majority demand for glycerin is from processed food manufacturing companies as glycerin acts as a humectant that is utilized for food preservative. Glycerin is also gaining its value dairy as sweetener in dairy and confectionery industry. Moreover, it is also preferred by consumers in food products and items with the lower amount of carbohydrates. The demand for glycerin is also going to rise owing to growing number of health conscious consumers worldwide as in glycerin acts as a substitute for sugar.

Challenges:
  • Fluctuations in prices

As all other chemical compounds, glycerin is also susceptible to the price variations and fluctuations. Also, due to the lack of the interdependence between the supply and demand side of the market, the prices of the glycerin remains volatile. The supply side increases only when the demand for biodiesel goes up. Historically the price of glycerin was low due to oversupply. However, with the discovery of new applications and expansion of the market, the demand of the glycerin started rising and so do the price. Thus, this factor will limit the market growth and development in future.

Segmentation Analysis:

The global glycerin market has been segmented based on source, process, grade, end-user and regions.

  • The source segment is divided into biodiesel and soaps. The biodiesel segment is expected to register highest growth of 7.2%over the forecast time period. The segment growth is attributed because of the growing demand for sustainable and renewable energy resources. The glycerin market will expand as long as there is an increasing production of biodiesel.
  • The process segment includes saponification, trans-esterification and fat splitting. The trans-esterification segment dominated the market with a market share around 53% in 2020. The segment growth is mainly attributed because trans-esterification of triglycerides with alcohols is a process which is broadly used in biodiesel production plants.
  • The grade segment includes crude and refined. The refined segment dominated the market with a market in 2020. The segment growth is mainly attributed because rising acceptance of refined glycerin in pharmaceutical, food and beverage, cosmetics and personal care industry sectors.
  • The end-user segment is divided into pharmaceutical, chemical, food & beverages, personal care, tobacco and others. The personal care segment dominated the market with a market share around 38% in 2020. The demand for glycerin in cosmetics and healthcare industries in the forecast years is rising, thereby boosting the Glycerin market size. However, the food packing industry is going to have the highest growth during the forecast period.
Regional Segmentation Analysis:

The regions analyzed for the market include North America, Europe, South America, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East and Africa. Asia Pacific region emerged as the largest market for the glycerin market with a 32.4% share of the market revenue in 2020.

  • The regional growth is mainly attributed because of the rise in living standards of the people across the globe. The rise in disposable income of the people coupled with the change in lifestyle of the people is going to favor the market growth and development in the present scenario. The rising health consciousness of the people in and across the region is going to have a positive impact on the packaging of food and pharmaceutical products.
  • Europe region is projected to hold the second largest market share of around 27% in 2020. The regional growth is attributed owing to the stable growth f biodiesel production in and across the region.
