The global dental x-ray market was valued at USD 2.51 billion in 2022, increasing at a CAGR of 8.40% from 2022 to 2030 and anticipated to reach USD 4.79 billion by 2030. Asia Pacific is expected to grow the fastest during the forecast period.

Market Introduction:

Dental X-rays– commonly known as dental radiographs – are utilized to find invisible dental issues that are difficult to detect via manual means. These contain unseeable dental structures, tumors, and cysts related to oral cancer, bone loss due to missing cavities, teeth, and other problems that are not observable to the naked eye. The x-rays penetrate the body to form an image on film or screen. X-rays can be either digital or developed on a film. Dental radiography is always under-utilized in veterinary practice. A radiographic image is captured using a controlled burst of X-ray radiation. The amount of radiation assisted in taking the radiographic image is exceptionally minimal and, therefore, safe. Diagnostic radiographs are essential for producing a therapy plan in many procedures, and treatment may be contraindicated without them. There are multiple types of diagnostic radiographs. Periapical radiographs are probably the most familiar, with images of a few teeth at a time captured on small film cards inserted in the mouth. Periapical x-ray devices are normally mounted on the wall inside each therapy room. Further, panoramic x-rays generate a 5" x 11" (or 15 cm x 30 cm) wrap-around radiographic image of the patient's mouth. This is valuable for studying the patient's jaw and the position of the teeth relative to one another. Cephalometric x-rays capture a radiographic image of the whole head, usually in profile. Orthodontists most often utilize these films to diagnose misalignment of the jaw and bite problems. Ceph images are taken on a traditional panoramic appliance outfitted with a cephalometric film-holding arm mounted to one side. Tomograms show an individual layer or "slice" of the mouth & blur out other layers. This X-ray analyses challenging-to-see structures because other nearby systems are blocking the sight. Digital imaging is a 2-D type of dental imaging that permits images to be sent directly to a computer. The images can be considered on-screen, stored or printed out in seconds. Digital imaging has many other benefits compared with traditional X-rays.

Recent Development

For example, in August 2021, Vatech Company, a worldwide dental imaging device maker, announced opening of an e-commerce area in India. This move is part of Vatech’s more extensive plan to expand its business holdings in multiple countries.

Market Dynamics:

Drivers:

The increasing prevalence of dental illnesses: The rising incidence of oral cancer and increased dental treatments propel market growth. Poor oral health among the elderly is a substantial public health problem and an increasing embarrassment for several countries. Poor oral health has raised interest within the senior community for dental imagery technologies. Further, the growing number of initiatives by various companies and governments is also helping to propel the market growth during the forecast period. Moreover, an increase in the figure of cases including oral sickness, growing focus of leading & emerging players on emerging markets, increasing number of strategic acquisitions, and the increased research investment by dental imaging firms has resulted in advancements like X-ray radiography anticipated to drive the market growth. The high cases of missing, decayed teeth are expected to increase the demand for periodontal & endodontic procedures like scaling and root canal treatment.

Restraints:

A high cost: The high risks and complications associated with dental bridges and orthodontic treatments are restraining factors in the market. Also, the high cost of dental imaging techniques hampers market growth. Further, the high price of dental imaging tools for primary set-up and the raised prices of dental digital X-ray equipment inhibit market growth.

Opportunities:

The rising cosmetic dentistry: The focus on developing new technologies & dental materials is the driving factor of the market growth. Furthermore, the high disposable income, along with awareness about aesthetic appearance, is also helping to boost the market growth. However, a rise in awareness about dental care and increased medical tourism in various developing nations like Mexico and Brazil are encouraging market growth during the forecast period. Moreover, the increasing demand for tooth-whitening, non-metallic inlays, and on-lays has raised the demand for cosmetic dentistry, helping to boost the market growth. Additionally, the cognizance among the population about such techniques & procedures is also stimulating market growth.

Challenges:

Improper reimbursement: The treatments and the lack of reimbursement for cosmetic procedures are challenging factors in the market growth. Further, the reduced reimbursement and limited capacity and resources of primary healthcare facilities hamper the market growth during the forecast period. Also, the reductions apply to both the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) and Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System (HOPPS). This reduced reimbursement for computed radiology tools is anticipated to restrain the market growth.
